Keyboardist Jordan Rudess is so prolific, one wonders, when does the guy sleep? A gifted keyboardist who hears musical notes the way the rest of us see colors, Jordan was discovered as a prodigal keyboardist by his second grade teacher when he was only seven years old. For months, Jordan would accompany the class on piano in sing-alongs, having learned the musical passages by ear, with no training whatsoever. When Jordan's teacher informed his mother how much the class enjoyed having him play piano, Jordan's mom was flabbergasted, informing the teacher she was unaware Jordan even knew how to play the piano.
Jordan's parents immediately purchased a piano for the young maestro and 12-years of intense piano lessons commenced. As Jordan quickly exceeded the talents of his teachers, he was entered into intensive training at New York's prestigious Juilliard School of Music. In his teens, a friend introduced Jordan to a Moog synthesizer and that's when, as Jordan puts it, "The disease set in," and he was infected by the Rock and Roll bug, instantly gravitating to bands such as ELP and YES and their gifted keyboardists, Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman, respectively.
As a young adult, Jordan was retained as a clinician for Korg and a eventually a friend put up the funds to help Jordan record his first self-produced solo CD, LISTEN. As his illustrious career matured, Jordan has performed with guitarist Steve Morse and the legendary Dixie Dregs, recorded and toured with Jan Hammer and Tony Williams as well as guitarist Vinnie Moore, and wrote songs for - and recorded with - Annie Haslam of the group Renaissance.
Jordan also accounts for half of the high-powered progressive rock 'power duo,' "The Rudess Morgenstein Project" featuring Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein.
In mid-1999, Jordan was asked and accepted the offer to join legendary Progressive Hard Rock Band, Dream Theater. Originally in 95 Jordan and the Dream Theater explored the idea of joining forces, but other recording commitments and projects prevented Jordan from joining the band at that time.
Recognized as being comprised of some of the most musically proficient musicians alive, Dream Theater continues to defy the grunge and punk rock rehash herd, as well as pop's continuing - and somewhat never-ending - slide into total banality.
Between 1995 and 1999, Jordan continually recorded with Dream Theater alums guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy for two "Liquid Tension Experiment" CDs before being asked again to join Dream Theater as a full time member.
Since the end of 2000, Jordan has released five solo albums, including a complete CD of Christmas Music, and recorded all keyboard tracks on David Bowie's studio release, Heathen. To date, Jordan Rudess has appeared on almost 40 CDs, including his own solo albums, Dream Theater CDs and recordings by numerous other artists.
