Roland Notes

These discs were organized with two goals in mind, first, to lay out the data in the most flexible and musical way possible, and second, to utilize the Roland Volume ID and note mapping schemes to maintain compatibility with other drum libraries. Due to the vast quantity of data on these discs (almost 2,000 stereo samples) and some limitations in the Roland Standard note mapping scheme, liberties were taken. We decided to expand on the Roland Standard in areas where we found it confining. Some examples are as follows: The Roland Standard allows for two crash cymbals, whereas ours allows for three crash cymbals plus three crash bells. Roland allows for four types of hi hats - closed, loose, open, foot. We allow for six - tight, closed, loose, open, foot, open/closed.

For people who want to stick strictly to the Roland note mapping, Volumes 91 - 115 follow the Roland convention, but we suggest using Volumes 63 - 89. You will find them a bit more musical.
As mentioned above, you will find that we made good use of the Roland name ID system (the three character identifier at the beginning of the item name). All drum loops are preceded by a two or three digit number that represents the BPM of those samples, i.e. 66:_Slow Rock, 116:_Shuffle, 164:_Rock. The Drum hits and loops are preceded by the corresponding prefix listed below. The "_" character at the beginning of each name is the character issued by Roland to identify ILIO samples. (Look for the _ label!) An "R" at the end of a name denotes a Roland mapping. And finally, a small-case letter at or near the end of a name refers to the same kit in progressively decreasing size. An "a" requires the most memory, "b" a little less, and so on.

Memory Requirements
These discs were designed to be most effective on an S-760 or SP-700 with 32 megabytes of RAM. We did however build at least two versions of each drum kit that will load into 16 megs for you S-770/750 owners.

Levels, Panning and Velocity
Due to the fact that all of these Loops and Kits can be used in many different musical styles and may be mixed to various types of media, the levels of the drum kits are set to their maximum values. If you make use of multiple outputs you will most likely want to be recording at the maximum output levels and if you are using the stereo outputs you will probably want to mix the drums to your own personal liking. All drums were recorded in their stereo field, therefore panning on each drum and loop is hard left and right. Velocity curves on keyboards vary greatly between manufactures and even between models. The curves and scaling used here were set using a Roland D-50, Kawai K-5 and a Roland XP-50. If you need to change the velocity scale consult your controller's owners manual or change the Vel-Curve and/or Vel-Curve Sens in the TVA page of your sampler.

Sample Transfers
All samples were transferred digitally from a Macintosh using Interval Music's Transfer Station software. Contact ILIO for more information about Transfer Station.
