Fretworks
Fretworks was inspired by a need in the market
for truly great sounding alternative acoustic guitars. The sonic
spectrum of the acoustic six string is as broad as the number of
types of guitars available, and the number of artists who play them.
It would be impossible to try to encapsulate this universe of sound
in one volume like this. But here we have six truly great players,
from divergent backgrounds, whose styles and personalities are diverse
enough to offer a wealth of earthy hues for the sampling musician.
Musically, this disc is a collection of influences ranging from
Appalacian Folk, to St. Louis Blues, to Kentucky Bluegrass and Delta
Shuffle. The fundementals of Rock 'n' Roll, Country and Blues are
played without fluff or shine, just the essentials. While we sampled
a range of guitars from off the beaten path, including National
Steel, Mandolin, Baritone Guitar and a Gibson L12, the real stars
of this disc are the artists. Each of them are veterans of the fretboard
and bring decades of grit and grease to their playing, which you'll
no doubt discover as you wend your way through Fretworks. Producer
Frank Duncan had worked with many of them in New York and searched
out others to be involved in the project. Here's the rundown.
Hiram Bullock has appeared with such notables as The Brecker Brothers,
David Sanborn, Paul Simon, Chaka Kahn, Pete Townsend, Bob James,
Sting, James Brown, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Barbra Steisand,
Eric Clapton and James Taylor.
Mr. Bill Simms is a New York Blues legend, preforming and recording
with his own band in NYC. He has been on the scene for decades and
it shows through his unique and seasoned approach to blues music.
Look for a 13 hour documentry featuring his life, soon to be released.
Nunzio Signiore also has enviable blues and pop credits including
appearances with Bo Diddly, Taylor Dayne, Sammantha Fox and Jim
Crow.
C Lanzbom has had the distinct pleasure of working with other legends
like T. Lavitz, Billy Cobham, David Fisher and Shalom Chanoch.
Nat Harris preforms regularly with the Gil Evans orchestra in NYC
as well as doing countless studio work and jingles in the NYC area.
Last but not least, Doug Macaskill now lends his talents to commercials
and TV in the LA area and has appeared on records with Marc Jordan,
Mr. Mister, The Boomers and many others.
Most of the recording for Fretworks was done at Laughing Dog studios
in New York over a two month period. Of course the real work began
at the editing stage. It took a solid 12 months to tweak and refine
these raw performances into clean and usable samples, and another
two months to perfect the sampler formats.
Whether you're working on a film score, a dance re-mix, rock song
or commercial, Fretworks will be a great way to get rare, spicy
flavor into your tracks. And the varied playing styles of these
fine musicians will bring a relaxed, soulful spirit to all of your
music.
User Tips
Organization
The material on this CD and CD-ROM is organized primarily by Artist.
Within each artists' section, the performances are divided into
Riffs, Licks or Chords. Riffs are looped phrases, typically rhythm
parts, which provide the underlying feel of a track. Licks are melodic
elements, varying from just a couple of notes to four bars in length.
These can be used to create complete lead parts or simply to add
accents between verses. Chords are individual strums, usually provided
with up and down strokes. Additionally, some formats feature Jam
volumes (or combos) which are combinations of key and tempo related
riffs, licks and chords. (Akai users can create their own jams by
loading riffs and licks in the same tempo and key.)
Riffs and Licks are identified by tempo, the two or three digit
numbers at the beginning of the volume name. Within many of the
Riffs and most of the Licks volumes are individual programs or patches
which are identified by key. Load these individual patches if you
know the appropriate tonality for your music, or if you simply want
to try smaller memory versions.|
Mapping
For the most part, Riffs are mapped starting at . C4. Licks start
at C5, and chords at C2. This allows you to load all three types
of performances without overlapping keys. In many cases, however,
there are too many samples in a particular volume to map this way.
If so, you'll find samples mapped chromatically starting as low
as C2. Where there are both Major and Minor versions of samples,
the Minor versions will be mapped one octave above the Majors.
Memory
Volumes vary in size from just under four megabytes to almost 32.
In many cases you may want to load an entire volume, including all
riffs or licks of a given tempo. Where there are many different
samples in one volume, you may opt to try the "menu" patch,
identified with the letters, "MN." The menu patch contains
every available sample of a certain style and tempo, and is mapped
chromatically starting at C4. Again to save memory, you may also
load individual patches or programs of a specific key.
Notes for CD-ROM Users
If you're new to using CD-ROMs in your sampler, congratulations,
and rest assured that it's very simple to do. Once you've used CD-ROMs,
you won't go back! All you need is a dedicated CD-ROM drive for
your sampler, preferably 4X or higher, and a SCSI cable. (It's best
not to use your computer's internal CD-ROM drive.) Refer to your
sampler owner's manual for details on connecting your equipment.
You must also make sure your CD-ROM drive is compatible with your
sampler. Most manufacturers provide a list of compatible drives
on their web sites or via fax, or check out ILIO's web site for
more details: www.ilio.com.
As a rule, we recommend you have at least 32 megabytes of RAM installed
in your sampler. The majority of the current crop of CD-ROM titles
have 32 meg programs which you won't want to miss.
CD-ROM users also receive the audio version convenient for Speed
Referencing. Simply play this disc in your standard CD player to
quickly audition the selections before accessing the programs off
the CD-ROM.
Akai and Emu Users
Please refer to the listing below for the contents of both ROM discs.
This volume has been tested successfully on an Emu ESI-32. Refer
to your owners manual for tips on loading Akai volumes.
Roland Users
This disc was optimized for use on a 32 megabyte S-760 and will
work on the newest Roland samplers. It may be used with the S-750
and S-770 series samplers, but due to the sizes of some volumes
and performances, it may be necessary for you to load individual
patches instead of complete performances. Please refer to the listing
below for the contents of this disc.
Kurzweil Users
Please refer to the enclosed separate directory for a contents listing
and for specific information about this volume.
SampleCell Users
Please refer to the "Read Me" file enclosed on the CD-ROM
for specific information about this volume.
