Piccolo Trumpet

The piccolo trumpet has a sound which exhibits all the typical characteristics of the trumpet, although it is brighter and clearer than the trumpet in C. Today, the piccolo trumpet is used for orchestral playing mainly when the trumpet part is permanently in a very high register, e.g., for the performance of baroque clarino parts in Bach and Handel.

Fanfare Trumpets

To create the perfect counterpart for our now famous Epic Horns, we recorded an ensemble of six trumpet players (three trumpets in Bb and three in C). The Fanfare Trumpets provide tremendous impact with their sforzato and sforzatissimo playing techniques. And they deliver sparkling trumpet themes that soar magnificently above the orchestra.

Cornet

The cornet is usually played by a trumpet player and can replace it in the orchestra. It has a softer sound with fewer harmonics, but can be very expressive in the hands of a skilled player.

Flugelhorn^†

The flugelhorn in Bb is a member of the bugle-horns family like the euphonium or the (contra)bass tuba, even though the instrument looks rather like a larger trumpet. The name originates from the “Flügelmeister” of the 18th century, who had to coordinate various regimental flanks in a battle with blasts from the instrument.

Bass Trumpet

The bass trumpet has a mighty, full and dark timbre, which exhibits the typical trumpet characteristics in all registers. In the low register it is similar to the timbre of the tenor trombone, but it lacks the tenor trombone's warmth and fullness. In today's orchestral practice the bass trumpet is played by a trombonist because the instrument's mouthpiece is similar in size to the trombone's.

The trombone symbolizes the hereafter, the supernatural, the underworld. Its powerful sound is supposed to conjure up images of the terror and unknown dimensions of these realms of darkness. In general, the slightly wider bore of the bass trombone lends it a somewhat darker timbre and fuller sound than the tenor trombone.

Contrabass Trombone

The sound of the contrabass trombone has a dark and metallic timbre and ranges from a melodious and subdued piano to massive explosions. It has great intensity in all registers, but is most often played in the lower register, where it plays the deepest part (4th trombone) in the four-part trombone group.
