HANS ZIMMER GUITARS VOL. 2

Producer's Notes

As a sound designer and guitarist, this project has been a natural outgrowth of my primary interests. Creating sounds for composer Hans Zimmer has always been a rewarding challenge, allowing me to span the musical globe for extraordinary sounds, while always seeking superior techniques for recording and programming.

My aim has been to represent the instruments as authentically as possible, feeling intuitively that what we respond to in music is the individual voice and character of an instrument. Over the years, I have sought to continually devise new ways to lay out the sounds on the keyboard, utilize controllers to their fullest potential, and find the balance between playability and authenticity. Hopefully, this allows a composer to use the samples in the most musical way possible.

All of the electric guitars were recorded through a Matchless™ HC-30 amplifier (a pre-2000 unit for those who care) and a Matchless™ 1x12 cabinet. After spending a day at the Matchless factory AB-ing their cabinets, we found the 1x12 to have the most balanced tone of all. The cabinet was mic'ed with two SM57s - one in front and one in back, with the rear mic phase reversed. Both mics were run through API 512b mic preamps and into ProTools|24™.

The Middle Eastern instruments were mic'ed with a Neumann M-149 going through an API 512b or TLAudio mic preamp, and then into ProTools™. The South American instruments were mic'ed with either a Neumann KM-184 through an API 512b, or a B&K high voltage mic through a Millenia Media mic preamp.

Researching and seeking out these guitars was a great experience because I was able to learn how to play many new and unusual instruments. I am continually amazed that within the simple category of "guitar" lies an infinite variety of tonal colors.

Technological innovations have become invaluable to this craft and I am indebted to those individuals who have developed products that continue to make my job easier. The challenge for me has been to make use of all the advances while not allowing technology to interfere with the natural breath of each instrument. By striving to create a product that satisfies both the programmer and musician in me, I hope to have created sounds that you will enjoy in a wide variety of musical scenarios.
