Simply stated, all of the products and samples offered on our website are meant to be used in a musical context, either live or recorded, and only by you, the creative person who first registered the product.
Q: Do I have to pay additional licensing fees if my use of your products, sounds or samples ends up on a hit record or other high-profile projects?
A: No, your original purchase of the product is your only license fee, and you're free to use it in as many musical recordings as you want, forever. We hope you do get to use our products on a hit!
Q: Can I make my own sounds out of these products and resell them?
A: No. Redistribution or reselling of sounds made from our products is strictly prohibited. Most of our products are sample-based, which means that the sample libraries contained therein are protected by Sound Recording copyright law. Any incorporation of those sounds into other sound sets for re-distribution is considered derivative and therefore is not allowed by our license agreements.
Q: Do I have to credit the product if I use it on a recording?
A: Maybe. Many of our titles, especially the Spectrasonics sample libraries, require you to state the origins of the samples you used - just as if you were crediting a musician. Screen credit for film or TV use isn't required, except on soundtrack albums. Of course, credit for use of any product is always appreciated by the publisher.
Q: Can my writing partner, colleagues or friends use these products once I've licensed the disc? Can I form a group to buy and share products?
A: No, each person who uses the products must purchase their own copy (which licenses them to use the products). Anyone other than the original purchaser of the product, who uses the sounds, is doing so illegally - risking legal action against both them and their clients! Contact us regarding package deals for special circumstances.
Q: Can I offer these products to clients as part of my recording studio or rental company services? Or, as a freelance sound designer, can I put custom compilation discs together which include your sounds for my composer clients?
A: No. Sorry, but each person who uses the products or sounds (the creative person) has to be a licensed user. Otherwise, this could cause tremendous legal problems for studio or rental clients.
Q: Can I use these samples to make "Music Libraries?"
A: Yes, unlike some other companies, this is fully allowed with all of our products. The sounds have to be used within a musical context, however, and cannot be presented isolated or "solo'ed." In other words, the sounds may not be presented in individual "stems" offered as part of a multi-track music library unless they are part of a unique musical performance and mixed with at least one other sound. If you are still unsure as to how this part of our license agreement effects you, please contact ILIO or the publisher.
Q: Can I use these sounds in multimedia or game projects?
A: Maybe, as long as the sounds are irremovably imbedded in music. Only live or recorded music use is allowed for our products, and individual sounds may not be re-distributed in the form of "sound sets" for any reason. Read the license agreement that comes with each product. Then contact us, or the publisher, if you're still unsure.
Q: Can I use these sounds to make DLS sets or GM sets to be bundled with other products?
A: No. Again, any such usage is prohibited without prior clearance from the publisher. Otherwise, you're in direct violation of the license agreements. Contact ILIO, or the publisher, for more information.
Q: Is it OK to sell the used product or sample library to someone else if I'm finished with the project that I needed it for?
A: No. Unlike your musical gear, music CDs, or even software, you cannot give away or sell this product to someone else. You did not purchase the product. You purchased a license to use the product in your music. This license cannot be transferred by you. Some publishers may allow the seller to acquire a "license transfer" in certain cases for a fee. Contact the publisher for further information.
Q: What if I buy a used product from someone else?
A: No one other than an authorized dealer is allowed to sell these products. If the product has already been registered to someone else, it cannot be re-registered under your name. It is likely you will have trouble installing it, and you will not get technical support on a used product, nor will you qualify for updates or upgrades. However, some publishers allow the seller to acquire a "license transfer" in certain cases. Contact the publisher for further information.
Q: What happens if I purchase a Virtual Instrument or Sample Library from eBay, or an unauthorized dealer?
A: No ILIO authorized dealer is permitted to sell on eBay. Buying a product from eBay or an unauthorized dealer will not only void your license, but you risk legal action if you use the product in your work. In addition, purchasing from eBay or an unauthorized dealer does not guarantee the usability of the product. For example, you may receive a burned duplicate with no documentation that may not install properly, and has no support, and no possibility of upgrading.
Q: What if I still have questions?
A: Please contact us any time to discuss any particular licensing questions you may have. We want to help you!
NOTE: These answers are general guidelines. For specific licensing questions about a certain product, read the License Agreement that came with the product. Always contact the publisher when in doubt!
