Clarinet (Eb)

The clarinet is the most recent addition to the woodwind family (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet) and was the last woodwind instrument to be integrated into the symphony orchestra. The clarinet in Eb is a sopranino clarinet and at 49 cm is a little shorter than the commonly used clarinet in Bb and as a result has a higher pitch.

Clarinet (Bb)

The clarinet is the most recent addition to the woodwind family (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet) and was the last woodwind instrument to be integrated into the symphony orchestra. The clarinet in Bb, a soprano woodwind instrument, is the one most commonly used in the clarinet family. The clarinet is most often used in the upper ranges. Due to their vocal character it has frequently been compared to the human soprano voice. In the lower ranges the sound is darker, fuller, mellower and has a warmer timbre; especially in piano it can produce melancholy effects.

Bass Clarinet

The bass clarinet has been used to provide the bass voice in the orchestral woodwind section since the middle of the 19th century, a role it shares with the bassoon. The bass clarinet is appreciated for its expressive timbre, which is often poetically described as "dark velvet". Generally one bass clarinet is used in the orchestra. The bass clarinet is not only an established member of the full orchestra but also of clarinet orchestras and military bands. In addition, it is now also found in chamber music ensembles.

Bassoon 1

The bassoon is a woodwind instrument in the tenor and bass register. It has been used to provide the bass voice in the orchestral woodwind section since the middle of the 19th century, a role it shares with the bass clarinet. In all its registers, the notes of the bassoon - especially staccato notes - are well suited for the performance of humorous, comic effects and the depiction of musical caricatures.

Contra Bassoon
