Audio Modeling FAQ

General FAQ

Audio Modeling is the developer behind SWAM, a family of physically modeled solo acoustic instruments, along with the Camelot live performance host and the Ambiente acoustic space simulator. ILIO is the authorized North American distributor for Audio Modeling.

What is SWAM and how is it different from a sampled instrument?

SWAM stands for Synchronous Waves Acoustic Modeling. Instead of playing back recorded samples, a SWAM instrument is computed in real time using physical modeling, so the sound responds continuously to how you play it. This gives you smooth, expressive control over dynamics, vibrato, and articulation without the audible steps and crossfades common to sample libraries. SWAM is not sample based and is not AI or generative.

Which Audio Modeling products does this FAQ cover?

This FAQ covers the Audio Modeling desktop catalogue: the SWAM Solo Strings, SWAM String Sections, SWAM Solo Woodwinds, and SWAM Solo Brass instruments and their bundles, plus Camelot, the live performance host, and Ambiente, the acoustic space simulator. The Audio Modeling iOS apps, including GeoShred, GeoSWAM, and Naada, are covered in a separate FAQ.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Every desktop product offers a 15-day free trial, including each individual SWAM instrument, Camelot, and Ambiente. The trial is fully featured with no limitations and requires no credit card. To start it, create a free account at my.audiomodeling.com, install the Audio Modeling Software Center, sign in, and click TRY on the product you want. Once you purchase, your license replaces the trial. There is no free or freemium tier for Camelot; it is a paid application with a trial.

What is Camelot?

Camelot is a live performance host. It combines a setlist manager, a plugin host, a digital mixer, a PDF score reader, a multitrack audio player, and a MIDI patchbay and router in one application. Camelot 2.0 adds Smart Map automatic mapping that covers a large library of hardware controllers. Camelot is a paid application with a 15-day free trial.

What is Ambiente?

Ambiente is a geometric room and acoustic space simulator rather than a conventional reverb. It models geometric sound reflections so you can place multiple instances in a shared acoustic space, with centralized control across those instances. A crossgrade price is offered to existing SWAM owners. Ambiente also offers a 15-day free trial.

SWAM Instruments and Tools

The current SWAM generation is version 3, organized into solo and section instruments with several money-saving bundles. The notes below cover what is in each line and how the bundles fit together.

Which SWAM instruments are available?

The current version 3 catalogue is organized into these lines:

Which bundles are available?

Audio Modeling offers several bundles that group instruments at a lower combined price:

For current bundle pricing and the best path for the instruments you want, contact ILIO.

How much do SWAM instruments cost?

Individual SWAM instruments are priced from around 99 dollars, for example SWAM Violin, up to about 249 dollars for instruments such as SWAM Saxophones and SWAM Flutes. Camelot Pro is around 149 dollars. Ambiente is around 149 dollars on its own, or around 49 dollars when bought together with any SWAM instrument. Bundles offer a lower combined price than buying the instruments separately. All prices are in US dollars and are subject to change, so confirm current pricing with ILIO before ordering.

How do I download, install, and update my products?

Downloads, installation, authorization, and updates are all handled by the Audio Modeling Software Center, a desktop manager app for macOS and Windows. Download the Software Center, sign in with your Audio Modeling account, choose the plugin formats and install paths you want, and run the guided install. Then rescan plugins or restart your DAW. Updates are one-click inside the Software Center, with release notes available for each version.

What is the difference between SWAM version 2 and version 3?

Version 3 is the current SWAM generation. Audio Modeling announced the discontinuation of support for version 2 products in June 2025. If you are buying today, you are buying version 3. For questions about upgrading from an older version, contact ILIO.

What is UniMIDI Hub and does ILIO carry it?

UniMIDI Hub is a MIDI routing and management utility from Audio Modeling. It is a standalone application for macOS and Windows and is licensed through the same Audio Modeling account model as the other products. Contact ILIO if you would like to add it to an order or have a setup question.

Where do I find the latest updates for my SWAM instruments?

All updates are delivered through the Audio Modeling Software Center. Open the Software Center, sign in with your Audio Modeling account, and any available updates appear next to each product so you can install them individually or use Install All. Restart or rescan your DAW after updating. Release notes are published for each version. If you originally purchased SWAM instruments from Samplemodeling, Audio Modeling has a dedicated article on where to find those updates, and ILIO can help if you are unsure which account holds your license.

System Requirements and Controllers

SWAM, Camelot, and Ambiente are lightweight by virtual instrument standards, but they are expression driven, so a real-time controller matters more than raw horsepower. The notes below cover supported systems, plugin formats, and recommended controllers.

What are the system requirements for SWAM instruments and Ambiente?

SWAM version 3 instruments and Ambiente run on macOS 10.13 through the current macOS release and on Windows 10 and 11, both 64-bit. Apple Silicon, including M1, M2, and M3, is supported natively across the plugin formats, including AAX. A modern computer is recommended; a single instance can run on a system with at least a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and less powerful systems may need larger buffers and higher latency. 32-bit support was discontinued in late 2017.

How much RAM and disk space does SWAM use?

SWAM has a small footprint. RAM per instance varies by instrument, roughly 30 to 52 MB for Solo Strings and Brass, around 70 to 160 MB for the various woodwinds, and around 173 to 176 MB for String Sections. The disk install footprint runs roughly 36 to 180 MB per product depending on platform and how many formats you install, with full bundles reaching up to about 2.4 GB on macOS. Ambiente uses around 60 MB of RAM per instance, with 4 GB of system RAM recommended.

Which plugin formats are supported?

SWAM version 3 instruments and Ambiente are available as a standalone application and as plugins. On macOS the formats are standalone, Audio Units, VST, VST3, and AAX. On Windows the formats are standalone, VST, VST3, and AAX. Audio Units is macOS only. All formats are 64-bit, and AAX is provided as a native format including on Apple Silicon. NKS support is provided through VST3 only. If you have a specific Pro Tools or host compatibility question, contact ILIO.

Does SWAM work with NKS and Komplete Kontrol?

Yes. NKS support is provided through the VST3 plugin, so load SWAM as a VST3 instrument to use it with NKS-aware hosts and hardware such as Komplete Kontrol keyboards. If you need help confirming NKS behavior for a particular controller or host, contact ILIO.

What are the system requirements for Camelot?

Camelot and Camelot 2.0 run as a standalone host on macOS 10.14 Mojave through the current macOS release and on Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. Camelot hosts Audio Units, VST, and VST3 plugins on macOS and VST and VST3 plugins on Windows. Camelot also runs on iPad, but iOS is outside the scope of this FAQ.

Do I need a special controller to play SWAM?

A physical controller is recommended for expressive live playing but is not strictly required to install and run SWAM. SWAM instruments are expression driven, and a real-time expression controller brings out the modeling. Useful options include a breath controller, an expression pedal, a mod wheel, a wind controller, or an MPE controller such as a Seaboard, LinnStrument, or Touche. The default expression control is MIDI CC11, and it can be remapped, for example to CC7 to use a volume pedal.

Which controllers work with SWAM and Camelot?

SWAM works with a wide range of third-party MIDI and expression hardware, including breath controllers, wind controllers such as the Akai EWI, Aodyo Sylphyo, Roland Aerophone, and Yamaha models, and MPE controllers like the ROLI Seaboard, LinnStrument, and Touche. These devices are made by their respective manufacturers and are not warranted by Audio Modeling. Camelot 2.0 adds Smart Map automatic mapping that covers a large controller library across many manufacturers and device models. For help matching a specific controller to your setup, contact ILIO.

Authorization and Activation

Audio Modeling uses online license activation tied to your Audio Modeling account. The notes below cover how many computers a license covers, how to move a license, and the offline activation caveat.

How does authorization work?

Authorization is handled online and tied to your Audio Modeling account. You manage your license keys, activations, and downloads through your account and the Audio Modeling Software Center. The customer portal is at my.audiomodeling.com, where you register license keys and manage activations.

On how many computers can I activate a SWAM license?

You can activate a SWAM license on multiple computers owned by the same person, up to the maximum number of activations available for that product. The exact number depends on the product and is shown in your Audio Modeling account at my.audiomodeling.com. If you need more activations than your license includes, for example for a larger studio, contact ILIO.

How do I move a license to another computer?

You can move a license between machines by deauthorizing an activation in the customer portal. Sign in at my.audiomodeling.com, go to Products, then My Products, choose Manage, and open Manage your license activations. Releasing an activation there frees up a slot for another computer.

I activated offline. Why can't I deauthorize that computer in the portal?

Keys that were activated offline cannot be deauthorized through the customer portal. To release an offline-activated slot, open a support ticket with Audio Modeling, who handle license management actions through their portal and support system. ILIO can point you to the right place if you are unsure where to start.

Do Camelot and Ambiente use the same activation model?

Ambiente uses the same online activation tied to your Audio Modeling account, with deauthorization managed in the customer portal. Camelot is licensed through the same Audio Modeling account model. If you have a specific question about Camelot's activation count for a multi-computer setup, contact ILIO and we will confirm the current terms with Audio Modeling.

I lost my license keys. How do I recover them?

Your license keys are stored in your Audio Modeling account, so you can recover them by signing in to the Customer Portal at my.audiomodeling.com and viewing your registered products. If you cannot access your account or your keys are missing, email support@audiomodeling.com with your proof of purchase, such as the purchase email or order number, and Audio Modeling will help you recover them. Contact ILIO if you bought from us and need help locating your order details.

My license keys stopped working. What happened?

License keys can stop working after a major system change, such as an operating system upgrade, a CPU, motherboard, or BIOS change, or after reaching your activation limit. In most cases the fix is to deauthorize the old activation in the Customer Portal at my.audiomodeling.com under Products, My Products, Manage, then Manage your license activations, which frees the slot so you can reactivate. If the activation was done offline, you will need to open a support ticket with Audio Modeling to release it. Contact ILIO if you are unsure where to start.

Does Camelot need an internet connection to perform live?

No. Camelot is built for live performance and supports unlimited offline sessions, so you can work and perform without an internet connection. You only need to be online to activate, download, and update through your Audio Modeling account and the Software Center. Contact ILIO if you have a specific live rig question.

Licenses and Transfers

Every Audio Modeling product comes with a license tied to your account. The notes below cover what is included and how a transfer to another owner is handled.

Can I sell or transfer my license to another user?

Yes. You can transfer a license to another person free of charge by emailing support@audiomodeling.com. The license must have been activated online and be registered in your Audio Modeling account, and you supply the recipient's account email or full name and email. A few conditions apply: NFR (Not For Resale) licenses cannot be transferred, EDU licenses can only transfer to someone eligible for the same educational discount, and products bought together as a set must transfer together rather than be split. The process can take up to about one week. ILIO can help you get started, and the transfer itself is processed by Audio Modeling.

Is there a fee to transfer a license?

There is no fee. Audio Modeling states the transfer process is free of charge, though it can take up to about one week to complete. The license must have been activated online and be registered in the current owner's account. Contact ILIO and we will help you reach the right team.

Can I buy a used SWAM license?

A used license can only change hands through an approved Audio Modeling transfer, and only if the product was activated online through the customer portal. NFR licenses cannot be transferred. Before buying secondhand, confirm with the seller that the license qualifies, and contact ILIO if you want help verifying eligibility.

Sales and Ordering

The following answers cover ordering Audio Modeling products from ILIO. Authorization, registration, downloads, and updates are handled through your Audio Modeling account and the Audio Modeling Software Center regardless of where you purchased.

I'm new to SWAM. Where should I start?

A single instrument such as SWAM Violin or SWAM Saxophones is an inexpensive way to hear the modeling for yourself, and every individual instrument has a 15-day free trial. If you know you want a whole section, a bundle such as the Solo Strings, Solo Woodwinds, or Solo Brass bundle is more economical than buying instruments one at a time. For a recommendation based on what you play, contact ILIO through the Contact page.

When will I receive my license and download after ordering?

Once your ILIO order is processed, your license is added to your Audio Modeling account and the product becomes available to download in the Audio Modeling Software Center. You will receive an order confirmation with instructions. If you do not see it, check your spam folder before contacting support.

What is the refund or return policy?

Download sales are treated as final, and Audio Modeling does not issue refunds once a download has begun, which is why we recommend the 15-day free trial as the way to evaluate a product before you buy. If you have a billing problem or a special circumstance, contact ILIO before ordering or as soon as the issue arises and we will help you reach the right team.

Do bundles save money compared with buying instruments individually?

Yes. Bundles group related instruments at a lower combined price than buying each title separately, and there are bundles at several sizes, from a single section up to the Orchestra and ALL IN bundles. Because pricing is subject to change, contact ILIO for the current bundle price and the most economical path to the instruments you want.

Is there a crossgrade for Ambiente?

Yes. Audio Modeling offers a crossgrade price on Ambiente for existing SWAM owners. To confirm your eligibility and get the crossgrade price, contact ILIO with your Audio Modeling account email and the SWAM products you already own.

Is there an educational discount for students and teachers?

Yes. Audio Modeling offers a 50 percent educational discount on desktop products for eligible students and teachers. To apply, email support@audiomodeling.com with proof of your status, such as a student or teacher ID or an institution letter, along with your school details. After approval you receive a coupon code you can use on any desktop product. The educational discount applies to desktop products only, not iOS apps, and only one offer or coupon can be applied at a time. Contact ILIO if you would like help getting started.

I already own some SWAM instruments. Are there upgrade or bundle completion discounts?

Yes. Audio Modeling offers discounts for existing owners, including family discounts when you add an instrument from a family you already own, bundle completion paths shown in your account at my.audiomodeling.com, and specific upgrade offers such as the Samplemodeling Sax Brothers to SWAM Saxophones upgrade and Solo Strings version 2 to version 3 promotions. Only one offer or coupon can be applied at a time. Contact ILIO with your Audio Modeling account email and the products you already own and we will confirm the best path for you.

Can I combine more than one discount coupon on an order?

No. Audio Modeling applies only one offer or coupon per order, so educational, upgrade, and promotional coupons cannot be stacked. Contact ILIO if you are not sure which discount gives you the best price.

How do I create an Audio Modeling account and register my license?

Create a free account at my.audiomodeling.com, then register your license key or redeem code in the new product registration field and confirm using the link in the email Audio Modeling sends you. Once registered, download and install the Audio Modeling Software Center from audiomodeling.com, sign in, and your products are ready to install and authorize. If you bought from ILIO and your license is not showing up, contact us.

How do I get technical support?

ILIO is your North American point of contact for pre-sales questions and post-sales support. Reach ILIO through the Contact page. License management and activation actions, including offline-key deauthorization tickets and approved license transfers, are handled through Audio Modeling's own portal and support system at support@audiomodeling.com, and ILIO can point you to the right place when needed.
