Overloud

General FAQ

Overloud is an Italian audio software developer. The catalog covers guitar amp and effects modeling (THU), Rig Libraries and SuperCabinet content for THU, the Gems studio plugins, REmatrix convolution reverb and IR libraries, and essential reverbs, along with other studio tools. ILIO is the authorized North American dealer for Overloud.

What are Overloud products and how do I use them?

Overloud makes software only. THU is a guitar amp, cabinet, and effects simulator. The Gems are studio processing plugins, and REmatrix is a convolution reverb. These run as standalone applications or as plugins inside a 64-bit DAW. Rig Libraries and SuperCabinet IR libraries are content that loads into THU rather than separate plugins. Everything is delivered digitally, with no boxed product.

How do I download and install my Overloud products?

Overloud handles downloads through the website account portal rather than a separate manager application. Create a free Overloud account, sign in under Client Login, and open the Download Installers section to see every product you own with Mac and Windows download links. Download the installer, run it, then launch the app and enter your account credentials and serial number to authorize.

How do I update or redownload my products?

Updates and redownloads both run through the same Overloud account portal. Sign in, open the Download Installers section, and download the latest installer for any product you own, for both Mac and Windows. Run the new installer to update, or simply reinstall if you have lost your files. Changelogs are shown on the download pages, and there is no need to keep the original installers.

Do I need to be online to use Overloud products?

An internet connection is required at the time of authorization. Once authorized, the software runs day to day without a connection. If you need to run on a machine that has no internet access, the optional USB-stick authorization is the supported path for offline use. See the Authorization section below for details.

How do updates work, and are they free?

Updating means downloading and running the latest installer. Sign in to your Overloud account, open the Download Installers section, download the newest installer for any product you own, and run it over your existing installation. There is no separate update application. Major free upgrades have been delivered this way, including the free Apple Silicon native builds for THU and the Gems and the free THU v1 to v2 upgrade.

THU, Gems, and REmatrix

Overloud's catalog falls into a few families: THU for guitar, the Gems for studio processing, and REmatrix for reverb. The notes below explain what each one is and how the add-on libraries fit together.

What is THU and what comes with it?

THU is Overloud's guitar amp, cabinet, and effects simulator, sold in tiers. THU Premium is the full-featured flagship and includes SuperCabinet at no extra cost. THU Essentials is the entry tier. Genre Editions such as THU Metal, THU Rock, and THU Funk and R&B are curated bundles. Every version includes the integrated Rig Player that reproduces captured rigs; there is no separate standalone Rig Player application.

Do I need to buy THU to use a Rig Library or a SuperCabinet library?

You need THU in some form, but not necessarily a paid version. Rig Libraries (such as Choptones, BHS, TAF, BM, and LRS) and SuperCabinet IR libraries are content, not standalone plugins, so they load into THU. A free THU Essentials with the Rig Player is available as a free download, so library buyers always have a host to load their rigs. Overloud offers many thousands of rigs across its Rig Libraries, with Choptones described as the largest amp-capture collection for THU. For the current rig count in a specific library, check the product page or contact ILIO.

What is SuperCabinet?

SuperCabinet is Overloud's Fluid IR cabinet processor. It is included free with a THU Premium license. Sold standalone, it ships with THU models plus the Rig Player. Each SuperCabinet factory library is built from a large set of microphone, position, and power-amp combinations, producing many impulse responses per library. For the exact model and impulse-response counts in a specific SuperCabinet library, check the product page or contact ILIO.

What are the Gems?

The Gems are Overloud's studio processing plugins, sold individually or as the Gems Bundle. The bundle collects Overloud's studio processors, including compressors (Comp LA, Comp76, Comp160, Comp670, Comp G), EQs (EQP, EQ550, EQ84, EQ495), saturation and distortion (Sculptube, Fuse), effects (Dopamine, Modula, OTD-2, Echoson), and production tools (Voice and Tapedesk). The exact contents grow as Overloud adds new Gems, so check the current bundle listing or contact ILIO for what is included today. Unlike Rig Libraries, the Gems are full standalone plugins and do not require THU.

What is REmatrix?

REmatrix is Overloud's convolution reverb, developed in collaboration with MoReVoX. It runs multiple convolvers in parallel and ships with a large set of impulse responses and presets. A free REmatrix Player loads any REmatrix library, and the REmatrix Complete Bundle includes REmatrix plus all of its libraries. REmatrix is a full standalone plugin.

What about Breverb 2, Mark Studio 2, and SpringAge?

These are additional standalone Overloud plugins. Breverb 2 is an algorithmic reverb suite that emulates seven classic 1980s and 1990s hardware reverbs. SpringAge is a spring reverb emulation built on four spring models (AQTX, S201, ANGEL, and 4400). Mark Studio 2 is a bass amplifier and cabinet simulation suite built on the Markbass tone, with 6 Markbass amplifier heads, 9 cabinets, and a built-in pedalboard. Like the Gems and REmatrix, these install and authorize on their own and do not require THU.

System Requirements and Performance

Overloud's system requirements vary slightly by product line. The figures below come from Overloud's official compatibility pages. If you are unsure about a specific machine or operating system version, contact ILIO before purchasing.

What are the system requirements for THU?

THU requires macOS 10.14 Mojave and above, or Windows 10 and above (64-bit only). Both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs are supported natively. The minimum hardware is an Intel Core i3 1.4 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, and a 1280x800 display. The Gem plugins are also Apple Silicon native and use roughly the same minimum hardware, though their minimum macOS and Windows versions can differ; confirm the current requirement for your machine with ILIO. Overloud's compatibility pages state a minimum operating system rather than the newest tested release, so before upgrading to a brand-new macOS version, confirm support for your specific products with ILIO. No hardware controller or dongle is required for any Overloud product.

What are the system requirements for REmatrix?

REmatrix and the REmatrix Player require macOS 10.9 Mavericks and above, or Windows 7 and above. Apple Silicon and 64-bit Intel are both supported natively. The minimum hardware is an Intel Core i3 1.4 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, and a 1280x800 display.

Which plugin formats are supported?

THU is available as an AudioUnit, VST, and AAX64 (Pro Tools 11 and 12) plugin on macOS, and as VST and AAX64 on Windows, plus a standalone application on both. The Apple Silicon build of THU adds VST3 alongside AudioUnit and VST2. The Gems are available as AudioUnit, VST, VST3, and AAX plugins, plus a standalone application; the newer Gem releases such as Gem EQP add VST3 alongside AudioUnit and AAX, and the Apple Silicon Gem build is offered as a standalone application plus AudioUnit, VST2, and VST3. REmatrix is available as AudioUnit, VST, AAX64 (Pro Tools 11 and above), and a standalone application on macOS, and as VST, AAX64 (Pro Tools 11 and above), and standalone on Windows, with both Intel and Apple Silicon supported natively. A separate VST3 build of REmatrix is not listed on Overloud's compatibility page, so if you specifically need REmatrix in VST3, contact ILIO and we will confirm with Overloud.

Will Overloud products run in Pro Tools?

Yes. Current AAX64 builds target Pro Tools 11 and above. Older Pro Tools releases used different formats: Pro Tools 8 and 9 used RTAS, and Pro Tools 10 used AAX (32-bit). If you need confirmation that a specific product version runs in your Pro Tools release, contact ILIO.

Do I need any special hardware to run Overloud products?

No. No dongle and no hardware controller are required. The only optional hardware is a standard USB mass-storage stick, which you can use to store an authorization for portable or offline use. The stick is not an Overloud-branded device; any ordinary USB drive works.

Which version should I install for Pro Tools or for Logic?

For Pro Tools, install the AAX64 build, which targets Pro Tools 11 and above. Older Pro Tools 8 and 9 used RTAS, and Pro Tools 10 used AAX 32-bit. For Logic or GarageBand, install the AudioUnit (AU) version, which is the format those hosts use. If you are unsure which build matches your host, contact ILIO.

My Overloud plugin does not show up in my DAW. What should I do?

Overloud publishes specific guidance for the most common hosts. First confirm you installed the correct format for your DAW: AudioUnit for Logic and GarageBand, VST or VST3 for most other hosts, and AAX for Pro Tools. Then rescan or reset your plugin database. Overloud has dedicated help articles for the plugin not appearing in Ableton Live, Logic, and Cubase. If the plugin still does not appear after a rescan, contact ILIO and we will help, or reach Overloud support with your host and OS version.

What do I need to play guitar through THU at home or live?

To play guitar through THU you need a third-party audio interface with a guitar (instrument) input and low input and output latency, connected by USB or FireWire. Overloud does not sell hardware. THU runs as a standalone app or as a plugin in your DAW, and the interface handles getting your guitar into the computer and the sound back out with minimal delay.

Authorization and Serial Numbers

Overloud uses its own serial number and online activation system rather than iLok. After purchase from ILIO, you receive your serial number by email and authorize the software in-app or from your Overloud account.

What copy protection does Overloud use? Does it support iLok?

Overloud uses its own proprietary serial number and online activation system. iLok is not supported. There is no hardware dongle. Activation is a software procedure performed in the app, and the Manage Licenses window appears automatically the first time you launch a product.

How do I authorize the software?

Install the product, then launch it. The Manage Licenses window opens automatically on first launch, or you can open it from the LICENSES button inside THU. Sign in with your Overloud account credentials and enter your serial number, then choose where to deposit the authorization: on the computer itself or on a USB device. An internet connection is required at the time of authorization.

How many computers can I authorize with one serial?

A single serial can authorize up to three computers at the same time, in any mix of Mac and Windows, plus one USB stick. This applies across the Overloud catalog.

What is the USB stick authorization for?

The USB stick is an optional authorization location. You can authorize a computer directly with no hardware key, or deposit the authorization onto a standard USB mass-storage stick. A USB-stick authorization lets you carry your license between machines and run the software on computers that have no internet connection. A single Overloud USB stick can also hold licenses from Waves and Plugin Alliance at the same time.

Can I move my authorization to a different computer?

Yes. You can deauthorize an installation and move it to another computer. Deauthorization is available from the product's in-app license panel, and also remotely from your Overloud account: sign in, open the Serial Numbers section, and click the trash-can icon next to the authorization you want to remove. Remote deauthorization is the documented path when you no longer have access to the original computer. Overloud does not publish a cap on how often a license can be deauthorized and reactivated or moved between machines; if you run into a limit or an edge case, contact ILIO.

Can I try an Overloud product before buying?

Yes. Overloud offers a fully functional demo. The standard demo runs for 15 days with no feature limitations, including saving presets and plugin state and MIDI where supported; the computer must be online to start the 15-day demo, and after it expires the plugin stops processing audio and locks. Some products also offer a 10-minute demo for a quick look, with all features enabled except saving and exporting; after 10 minutes it stops and locks. No serial is needed to start a demo. Entering your purchased serial in the Authorize panel removes the demo restrictions.

My computer died before I could deauthorize. Can I recover my license?

Yes, in most cases. You can deauthorize remotely from your Overloud account: sign in, open the Serial Numbers section, and click the trash-can icon next to the authorization tied to the lost machine, which frees that seat. If the authorization cannot be removed this way, Overloud does not publish a self-service recovery path, so contact ILIO or Overloud support with your serial number and they will help restore access.

I forgot my Overloud password or cannot find my serial numbers. What do I do?

Use the Forgot Password link on the Overloud login form to receive a password reset email. Once you are signed in, your serial numbers are always listed in the Serial Numbers section of your account, along with each product and its active authorizations. If you still cannot locate a serial you bought through ILIO, contact ILIO and we will help.

Licenses and Transfers

Overloud licenses can be transferred or resold to another user for a flat administrative fee, with a few exceptions. The notes below cover the transfer process and what is and is not transferable.

Can I sell or transfer my Overloud license to another user?

Yes. Overloud allows license transfers for a flat administrative fee of 15 EUR or 20 USD per transfer. Free licenses, educational licenses, and NFR (Not For Resale) licenses cannot be transferred. Upgrade products transfer together with the upgraded product and cannot be split out separately.

How does the transfer process work?

The steps are:

  • Deauthorize all of your installations of the product. The transfer only proceeds when no authorized copies remain on any computer or USB stick.
  • Pay the transfer fee.
  • Have the recipient create an Overloud account.
  • Email support@overloud.com with the product serial number, your account email, and the recipient's account email.
  • Wait for the confirmation email that the transfer is complete.

Who handles the transfer, and the fee, for a serial I bought through ILIO?

The transfer process and the administrative fee are managed through Overloud's account portal and support email at support@overloud.com. If you bought your serial through ILIO and want help getting a transfer started, contact ILIO and we will point you to the correct steps and liaise with Overloud where needed.

How many licenses come with my purchase?

Each product comes with one serial number, which authorizes up to three computers at the same time plus one USB stick. For additional licenses, such as a multi-seat studio, contact ILIO.

Can I transfer an upgrade license on its own?

No. An upgrade product is tied to the base product it upgraded and transfers together with it. The two cannot be separated for an individual sale.

Sales and Ordering

The following answers cover ordering Overloud products from ILIO. Serial delivery, registration, downloads, and updates are handled through your Overloud account regardless of where you purchased.

I'm new to Overloud. Where should I start?

For guitar, THU is the place to start, and a free THU Essentials with the Rig Player is available so you can hear the engine before buying. For studio processing, the Gems Bundle collects Overloud's compressors, EQs, and effects in one purchase. For reverb, the free REmatrix Player lets you audition REmatrix libraries. For a recommendation tailored to your setup, contact ILIO.

I just bought a product. How do I get started?

After your ILIO order is processed, you receive an email with your Overloud serial number and download links. Create a free Overloud account if you do not have one, sign in, and open the Download Installers section to download the installer for your platform. Run the installer, launch the plugin or standalone app, and the Manage Licenses window opens on first launch. Sign in with your Overloud credentials, enter your serial number, and choose whether to deposit the authorization on the computer or on a USB stick. An internet connection is required at the time of authorization.

Do you offer educational pricing?

Overloud offers educational licenses, though note that educational licenses are not transferable. For current educational pricing and eligibility, and to apply it to an ILIO order, contact ILIO.

How much is the educational discount and how do I qualify?

Overloud offers a 50% educational discount for students currently enrolled in an educational institution. You apply through Overloud's online form with the product of interest, your name and email, your school name and location, and proof of enrollment. Overloud evaluates applications within about 3 working days and issues a 50% discount coupon on approval. Educational licenses cannot be transferred. To apply the discount to an ILIO order, contact ILIO.

When will I receive my serial number and downloads?

Once your ILIO order is processed, ILIO emails you the Overloud serial number with download instructions. Your products then appear in the Download Installers section of your Overloud account. Check your spam folder before contacting support if the email has not arrived.

What is your refund policy?

Overloud's published Conditions of Use allow a refund within one month of purchase. Before requesting a refund you must deauthorize all installations of the product and then contact customer service with your serial number. If your issue is an installation or authorization problem, Overloud asks that you contact support first, since most issues are resolved quickly. For any question about a refund on an ILIO order, contact ILIO and we will route it correctly.

How do I get technical support?

ILIO is your point of contact for everything related to your Overloud purchases: pre-sales questions, post-sales support, installation, and serial-number issues. Activation, deauthorization, and license-transfer mechanics are processed through Overloud's own account portal. For any case where you are unsure which path to take, contact ILIO to get support.
