General FAQ
Sessionwire is a remote music collaboration platform, a virtual studio for musicians, producers, and audio professionals. It combines HD video calling, studio-quality peer-to-peer audio streaming from your DAW, encrypted file transfer, and remote desktop in a single environment. ILIO is the exclusive North American distributor for Sessionwire.
What is Sessionwire and what can it do?
Sessionwire is a remote collaboration platform built for music production. In one workspace it provides real-time HD multi-party video calling, low-latency talkback, effective 48kHz 32-bit float stereo audio streaming at 400kbps, screen sharing, remote desktop control, encrypted peer-to-peer file transfer, and SessionChat messaging. It lets collaborators in different locations work on the same session.
What is Sessionwire 2.0?
Sessionwire 2.0 is the current generation: an all-in-one, workflow-based remote production environment. It brings HD video, studio-quality audio, DAW integration, file transfer, and remote desktop together in a single studio rather than across separate tools.
What are the three parts of Sessionwire?
Sessionwire has three components:
- The Studio app: the desktop environment where you host sessions, video call, stream audio, transfer files, record, and control remote desktops.
- The free Plugin Suite: AU, VST3, and AAX plugins that stream audio directly from your DAW into Sessionwire. No account is required to download it.
- Browser-based guest access: guests join a session from a supported browser (Chrome, Brave, or Edge) using an invite link, with no app, plugin, or signup needed.
Getting Started and Your Account
Sessionwire is an account-based service rather than a perpetual license, dongle, or serial. Setting up a host studio is quick, and inviting collaborators takes only a link. The notes below cover accounts, the free Plugin Suite, and how guests join.
Do I need an account to use Sessionwire?
Hosting a session requires a Sessionwire account. The free Member account gives you a public profile, guest access to other studios, audio, video, and file transfer as a guest, SessionChat messaging, and the free Plugin Suite. Hosting your own private studio and creating invite links requires an active paid plan. Guests you invite do not need an account to join.
How do I install the Plugin Suite and the Studio app?
Download the free Plugin Suite and the Sessionwire Studio app from sessionwire.com/download. No account is required to download the Plugin Suite. The Studio app installs to macOS or Windows, and the plugins install into your standard DAW plugin folders. DAW-specific setup guides are available in the Sessionwire Help Center.
How do guests join my session?
Guests join directly in a supported browser (Chrome, Brave, or Edge) using the invite link you send. There is no download, plugin, account, or signup required on their end. Only the host needs a paid plan to create invite links.
On how many computers can I use my account?
The Terms of Service grant a license to install one copy of the client software per device, so installing on more than one of your own devices appears permitted. Sessionwire does not publish a firm number for concurrent logins or a per-account device cap. Account sharing and transfer are not permitted. For confirmation on device limits for your specific plan, contact ILIO and we will verify with Sessionwire.
How do I start my first call and connect with other users?
Sessionwire's Getting Started knowledge base walks you through Starting your First Sessionwire Call, sending a Connection Request, and finding and connecting with other users. To host and invite guests you need an active Basic or Studio plan so you can create an invite link. Windows users should also read Sessionwire's Important Settings for Windows Users article.
Does my collaborator or client need to pay for Sessionwire?
No. Guests and clients do not pay. The host shares a unique invite link and the guest joins free from a supported browser (Chrome, Brave, or Edge); a free account is recommended but optional. Only the host needs an active Basic or Studio plan to create the invite link. On Studio, a host can have up to 50 people in a session as Guests plus Audience; on Basic, one guest.
How do I uninstall Sessionwire?
Sessionwire publishes a dedicated How do I uninstall Sessionwire? article in its General Info FAQ that walks through removing the app and the Plugin Suite on macOS and Windows. If you need help, contact ILIO and we will point you to the steps.
System Requirements
Sessionwire runs on current macOS and Windows systems and integrates with most modern DAWs. Because it is a live online service with peer-to-peer audio and file transfer, a stable internet connection matters as much as your computer.
What are the system requirements?
Per Sessionwire's current system requirements page:
- macOS: macOS 12 Monterey or later, on Intel or Apple Silicon.
- Windows: Windows 10 or later, 64-bit.
- Internet: a minimum of 5 Mbps upload and download. A wired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended over Wi-Fi for stability.
- Audio: any audio interface supported by your DAW.
- Webcam: any USB or built-in webcam, with HD recommended.
Some older support articles list different minimum specifications, so treat the system requirements page as current. If you are unsure whether your system qualifies, contact ILIO.
Which web browsers are supported?
Hosting and joining sessions in the browser is supported in Google Chrome (recommended), Brave, and Microsoft Edge. Safari and Firefox are not fully supported. For the most reliable experience, use Chrome.
Can I use Sessionwire on a phone or tablet?
Guests can join from Chrome, Brave, or Edge on iOS or Android, with Chrome recommended. iPadOS is not currently supported, and there are no dedicated native mobile apps. Mobile access is for joining as a guest rather than hosting a full studio.
Which plugin formats and DAWs are supported?
The Plugin Suite is available in AU, VST3, and AAX formats only. AU is macOS-only; on Windows the formats are VST3 and AAX. VST and VST2 are not supported. Stated DAW compatibility covers Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase, Nuendo, Studio One, REAPER, FL Studio, Bitwig Studio, Reason (version 12 and later), Mixbus, Mixcraft, GarageBand, LUNA, and more. In practice, any DAW that supports AU, VST3, or AAX should work.
How Collaboration Works
Sessionwire is built to make remote sessions feel like working side by side. It streams your real DAW mix rather than a compressed call, and adds tools for recording, file sharing, and hands-on help.
How does the audio quality compare to a normal video call?
Sessionwire streams effective 48kHz 32-bit float stereo audio over a dedicated HQ Audio stream at 400kbps, directly from your DAW. This is a different class of fidelity than the compressed VoIP audio of a typical video call. The free Plugin Suite uses separate Talkback and HQ Audio paths. The Send and Receive plugins (AU, VST3, AAX) stream the audio straight out of your DAW, so your collaborators hear your full mix with your plugins and signal chain intact, not a degraded copy. No separate virtual audio device is required for general use.
What can I do inside a session?
A session combines several tools in one place:
- HD multi-party video calling and low-latency talkback.
- Studio-quality audio streaming from your DAW.
- Session recording to disk.
- Screen sharing and remote desktop control.
- Encrypted peer-to-peer file transfer, with drag-and-drop from your DAW.
- SessionChat messaging and vault storage for files.
The specific features available depend on your plan.
What is Automute?
Automute silences talkback mics the instant your DAW begins playback, with an adjustable threshold, so playback is not interrupted by open mics. Combined with zero-latency local monitoring, it keeps the listening experience clean during a session.
Does Sessionwire work with the Pro Tools Aux I/O workflow?
Yes. Modern Pro Tools users can route audio through Aux I/O virtual drivers, so Sessionwire pipes audio to and from Pro Tools without inserting separate Send and Return plugins in the mixer. The Sessionwire Help Center includes a Pro Tools Aux I/O setup guide. If you need help configuring it for your rig, contact ILIO.
Why is there latency, and can I jam or play in real time?
There is always some latency on an internet call because audio has to travel between locations, so the round trip time depends on distance and network quality. Sessionwire is built for low-latency talkback, monitoring, and overdubbing rather than tight, click-locked real-time jamming over long distances. For the best results, use a wired Ethernet connection and keep both ends on fast, low-latency networks. Sessionwire's General Info FAQ covers latency, Round Trip Time, packet loss, and video jitter in more detail.
Can I record remote overdubs, including drums?
Yes. Sessionwire is designed for remote overdub sessions where one person plays and another records into their DAW. Sessionwire publishes a dedicated Remote Overdubs (Drums) workflow article in its knowledge base. For help setting up an overdub session on your rig, contact ILIO.
Do I need a DAW open to use Sessionwire?
No. You do not need a DAW open and running to use Sessionwire. For basic talkback and video you can use your system default microphone and speakers or any audio interface. The Plugin Suite is only needed when you want to stream your DAW's audio in and out of the session.
How is Sessionwire different from Zoom or a normal video call?
Sessionwire is built for music production rather than general meetings. Alongside HD video chat it carries a separate, dedicated high-quality stereo audio stream (effective 48kHz 32-bit float at 400kbps) streamed straight from your DAW, plus talkback, file transfer, session recording, and remote desktop control. A standard video call compresses everything into one low-quality voice channel. Sessionwire's General Info FAQ includes a How does Sessionwire compare to Zoom? article.
Plans and Subscriptions
Sessionwire offers its own tiered subscription plans, while ILIO sells one-time passes for customers who prefer not to subscribe. The notes below cover both routes. Confirm current figures at the time of purchase.
What plans does Sessionwire offer directly?
Sessionwire offers four tiers directly:
- Free: free forever. Public profile, connections, guest studio access, SessionChat, and the free Plugin Suite.
- Basic, $9 per month: private studio hosting, one guest invite, 100MB encrypted peer-to-peer file transfers, 5GB vault storage, and knock-to-enter with do-not-disturb.
- Studio, $29 per month (Most Popular): up to 50 participants, session recording to disk, remote desktop control, unlimited file size, 100GB vault storage, and Puremix Pro included.
- Business, custom pricing: multi-seat organization accounts, admin dashboard and analytics, dedicated onboarding, and volume pricing.
Annual billing is offered at a discount. For current pricing, confirm directly with Sessionwire or contact ILIO.
What does ILIO sell, and how is it different from a subscription?
ILIO sells one-time passes instead of a recurring subscription. The Sessionwire One Year Studio Pass is $299 and is marketed as a year of access with no subscription, meaning no auto-renew and no card kept on file. ILIO has also offered session-credit packs through its dealer network. Because catalogue and pricing can change, contact ILIO to confirm the current passes and packs and exactly what each one includes.
Does the One Year Studio Pass include the full Studio plan features?
Yes. The One Year Studio Pass maps to Sessionwire's Studio tier feature set: studio-quality HQ audio and HD video, low-latency real-time collaboration, DAW integration and audio streaming, encrypted file sharing, and video conferencing, on macOS and Windows. It is $299 for one year with no recurring subscription. The ILIO page does not publish the exact code-redemption steps, so for the activation walkthrough contact ILIO.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Sessionwire offers a one-time 14-day free trial of Sessionwire Studio with no credit card required. A permanent free Member tier is also available. For what happens to your account at the end of the trial, see Sessionwire's Billing FAQ or contact ILIO.
How do I cancel a direct subscription?
Cancellation is handled in your account. Open the Subscription Page, choose the Customer Portal, and select Cancel Plan. Sessionwire processes billing through Stripe. Under Sessionwire's Terms, your subscription auto-renews unless your cancellation request is received before 48 business hours prior to expiry, so cancel ahead of that window rather than at the last moment. There is also a 14-day change-of-mind period that ends once you use the platform, for example once you host a call or upload to the Vault. The ILIO One Year Studio Pass is a one-time purchase and does not auto-renew, so there is nothing to cancel. For questions about a specific charge or refund, contact Sessionwire's support or ILIO.
What currency am I billed in, and how can I pay?
Sessionwire bills direct subscriptions through Stripe. The currency you are billed in and the accepted payment methods are covered in Sessionwire's Billing FAQ (What currency will I be billed in? and How can I pay for Sessionwire?). The ILIO One Year Studio Pass is purchased from ILIO in the normal way at ilio.com. For payment questions on an ILIO order, contact ILIO.
Are subscriptions refundable, and is there a cancellation fee?
Under Sessionwire's Terms, annual subscriptions are refunded for full unused months minus used months minus a fixed $10 administrative fee. There are no refunds on a monthly plan cancelled mid-term, and none on an already auto-renewed subscription. There is also a 14-day change-of-mind period that ends once you use the platform. The ILIO One Year Studio Pass is a one-time purchase; for refund questions on an ILIO order, contact ILIO.
How do I change or upgrade my plan?
Plan changes, upgrades, and downgrades are made from your Sessionwire account on the Subscription page through the Customer Portal, as described in Sessionwire's How do I change my subscription? article. The ILIO One Year Studio Pass is a fixed one-year pass; for upgrade options contact ILIO.
Can I buy multiple licenses or seats for my team or school?
Yes. Sessionwire offers Enterprise seat licensing on a case-by-case basis, and the Business plan provides multi-seat organization accounts, an admin dashboard, usage analytics, dedicated onboarding, and volume pricing (trusted by institutions such as Berklee, Blackbird, and CRAS). For a large number of seats, contact ILIO or Sessionwire to discuss volume pricing.
Privacy and Security
Sessionwire keeps collaboration private by design, with encrypted transfers and invite-only studios. The notes below cover file security and what can and cannot be transferred between accounts.
How are files and sessions kept private?
File transfers use encrypted peer-to-peer connections, and you can drag and drop files straight from your DAW. Studios are invite-only, and paid plans add knock-to-enter and do-not-disturb so you control who reaches you. The vault provides storage for shared files, with capacity that varies by plan. For specific questions about data handling practices, contact ILIO and we will route them to Sessionwire.
Does Sessionwire work offline?
No. Sessionwire is a live online service, so an internet connection is required to host or join sessions, and there is no documented offline mode. The free Plugin Suite installs locally, but real-time collaboration runs over the network, with audio and file transfer carried peer-to-peer. For any question about connection requirements in a specific setup, contact ILIO or Sessionwire support.
Can I transfer or resell my subscription or pass to someone else?
No. Under Sessionwire's Terms of Service the license is non-transferable, so an account or subscription cannot be resold or transferred to another person. The ILIO One Year Studio Pass and session packs are one-time purchases delivered with an activation code, and no resale or transfer pathway is documented for them. If you have a specific situation, contact ILIO or Sessionwire support.
Troubleshooting Connections
Most session quality issues come down to your network. A few simple checks keep audio and video stable, and dedicated support is available when you need it.
My session audio or video is unstable. What should I check?
Sessionwire needs at least 5 Mbps upload and download. For the most stable session, use a wired Ethernet connection rather than Wi-Fi, which is strongly recommended. Confirm your connection speed, close bandwidth-heavy applications, and make sure both the host and guests meet the minimum. The Sessionwire Help Center has further troubleshooting guides, and ILIO can help if problems persist.
I don't have a webcam. Can I still use video?
A video driver must be present for video features, and any USB or built-in webcam works, with HD recommended. If you do not have a webcam, Sessionwire suggests installing the free EpocCam desktop driver so the video path is available.
I use a Universal Audio interface and hear a talkback echo. How do I fix it?
This is a known issue covered in Sessionwire's The Universal Audio Talkback Echo Issue article, caused by UA Console monitoring routing the talkback signal back. Sessionwire's article walks through the fix, and Automute also helps keep playback clean. For help configuring it on your rig, contact ILIO.
Where do I find setup guides and the knowledge base?
Sessionwire operates a Help Center and knowledge base at support.sessionwire.com, covering getting started, DAW setup, billing, and troubleshooting, plus a community forum. For purchase and pre-sales questions, or to be pointed to the right article, contact ILIO.
Sales and Ordering
The following answers cover ordering Sessionwire from ILIO. Account login, registration, and direct subscription billing are handled through your Sessionwire account regardless of where you purchased.
I'm new to Sessionwire. Where should I start?
A good way to begin is the free Member account plus the free Plugin Suite, which lets you join sessions as a guest and hear the quality firsthand at no cost. When you are ready to host your own studio, the ILIO One Year Studio Pass provides a year of access with no subscription. For a recommendation tailored to your setup, contact ILIO through the Contact page.
How is the One Year Studio Pass redeemed?
The One Year Studio Pass is a one-time purchase delivered with an activation code that you register against a Sessionwire account. The exact redemption steps are not documented on the pages reviewed, so if you need a walkthrough of the activation flow, contact ILIO and they will point you to the current process.
How do I redeem a promotion code or pass code?
Sessionwire codes are redeemed through the billing flow described in Sessionwire's How do I redeem a Promotion Code? article in the Billing FAQ. The ILIO One Year Studio Pass is delivered with an activation code that you register against a Sessionwire account; the ILIO page does not publish the exact steps, so for a walkthrough contact ILIO.
How do I get technical support after I buy?
ILIO is your North American point of contact for purchasing and pre-sales and post-sales questions. For account-level issues such as login, billing changes, cancellations, and in-session technical help, Sessionwire's own Help Center at support.sessionwire.com is the authoritative source. Contact ILIO through the Contact page, and ILIO will direct you to the right resource when an issue is account or billing specific.
