Physically Modeled Trumpet Plugin for Real-Time Expression

SWAM Trumpets is a physically modeled brass instrument plugin (VST/AU/AAX) designed for real-time expressive performance. Control articulation, breath response, vibrato, and phrasing directly as you play, without switching between sampled articulations.

Instead of triggering pre-recorded notes, SWAM Trumpets generates sound in real time, allowing continuous control over phrasing and tone. This makes it well suited for exposed brass lines, jazz phrasing, orchestral writing, and detailed production work.

It can be used to sketch ideas quickly, perform expressive solos, or layer multiple instances for section-style brass parts.

For composers and producers working with sample libraries, it offers a more direct approach to shaping brass parts. For live performers, it provides a responsive instrument that follows the behavior of real brass playing.

Real-Time Performance Control

Physical modeling allows brass performance techniques to be shaped continuously in real time. Parameters such as breath pressure, lip tension, and valve position respond directly to your playing, enabling natural transitions, glissandi, vibrato, and expressive articulation without keyswitching.

All key parameters can be controlled in real time via MIDI or your DAW:

  • Expression (Dynamic)
  • Note transitions (Staccato / Legato / Portamento) with no KeySwitches
  • Vibrato Depth (from regular to Shake)
  • Vibrato Rate
  • Portamento Time
  • Growl
  • Flutter Tongue
  • Breath Noise
  • Dirtiness
  • Sustain
  • Mute Control (wah/hand)
  • Attack Noise on pianissimo
  • Attack Tongue
  • Reactivity
  • Mutes
  • Pipe Gesture
  • Half Valve Amount
  • Valves and Slide Position
  • Dynamic Pitch
  • Microtuning
  • Main Volume
  • Pan Pot
  • Reverb Mix

Built Without Samples

SWAM Trumpets does not rely on pre-recorded samples. Instead, sound is generated in real time using physical modeling, allowing continuous variation in tone, dynamics, and articulation as you play. This avoids the limitations of fixed recordings and makes it easier to shape natural phrasing without switching between articulations.

Because it is not based on large sample libraries, the instrument has a small footprint and remains efficient in complex sessions. It can be used across multiple instances without the memory and loading constraints typical of sampled instruments.

A More Direct Way to Shape Brass Performance

SWAM Trumpets shifts the focus from triggering articulations to shaping performance. Instead of selecting from pre-recorded samples, you control phrasing, dynamics, and expression continuously, allowing the instrument to respond naturally to your playing.

It is particularly effective for solo brass lines, expressive passages, and performance-driven workflows where timing and phrasing matter.

FAQ

What is SWAM Trumpets?

SWAM Trumpets is a physically modeled brass instrument plugin (VST/AU/AAX) featuring Flugelhorn, Trumpets, and Piccolo Trumpet, designed for real-time expressive performance.

How is SWAM Trumpets different from sampled brass libraries?

SWAM Trumpets generates sound in real time using physical modeling, rather than triggering pre-recorded samples. This allows continuous control over articulation, dynamics, and phrasing without keyswitching.

Can I use SWAM Trumpets for live performance?

Yes. SWAM Trumpets is designed for real-time control and can be played live using MIDI controllers, offering a responsive playing experience suited for performance setups.

What styles are SWAM Trumpets suited for?

It works well for jazz, orchestral writing, film scoring, solo brass lines, and modern production where expressive control over phring and dynamics is important.

Do I need to switch articulations?

No. Articulation is controlled continuously through performance, allowing smooth transitions between playing styles without keyswitching.

Can I layer multiple instances?

Yes. Multiple instances can be layered to create ensemble textures, with each instance responding independently for a more natural result.

Does SWAM Trumpets include mutes?

Yes. The collection includes various mute controls, allowing real-time shaping of tone and articulation during performance.

Who is SWAM Trumpets for?

It is designed for composers, producers, and performers who need detailed control over brass performance in both studio and live environments.

Is SWAM Trumpets better than sampled brass libraries?

SWAM Trumpets offers a different approach. Instead of triggering pre-recorded samples, it generates sound in real time, allowing continuous control over phrasing, dynamics, and articulation.

Sample libraries and SWAM instruments can complement each other in a workflow. SWAM is often used for expressive solo lines and real-time performance, while sampled libraries can provide larger, pre-recorded ensemble textures. The two can also be layered together to combine detailed control with the depth of sampled sections.

System Requirements

Supported formats and OS

macOS:

  • macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) – 14 (Sonoma)
  • Standalone, Audio Units, VST, VST3, AAX 64bit
  • NKS (Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol)
  • Apple Silicon architecture supported natively (AAX Silicon supported natively starting from v3.7.0)

Windows:

  • Windows 10, Windows 11
  • Standalone, VST, VST3, AAX 64bit
  • NKS (Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol)

Small footprint!

  • Required space after installation: 16 MB per single instrument, 80 MB for each whole family, 240 MB for the complete Solo Brass bundle.
  • RAM occupancy: about 15 MB per instrument instance.

CPU load

  • The realism and expressiveness of SWAM instruments require a computer with at least a 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU for running a single plugin instance. Less powerful systems may also prove satisfactory, but may require larger buffer sizes, involving higher latencies.

Friendly for blind and visually impaired users!
