Studio Cimbasso

The cimbasso delivers a rich, focused low brass sound, often used as an alternative to the tuba in Italian opera by composers like Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. Its focused tone adds clarity and depth to brass sections without overpowering them. Recorded dry in its purest form at Vienna’s purpose-built Silent Stage with its tight, controlled ambience, this instrument brings a distinctive low-end tonality to your studio.

Operatic Low Brass

The term cimbasso emerged in Italy at the beginning of the 19th century, likely as an abbreviation of corno in basso (bass horn). Despite its name, it belongs to the tuba family and is typically played by a tubist. Its timbre is remarkably homogeneous across its range, with no dramatic shifts between registers. The overall sound is mellow, warm, rich, and resonant. As a unique alternative to the tuba, the cimbasso is a popular choice in operatic and symphonic music, offering depth without the broad resonance of a traditional tuba.

Versatile and Expressive

The library features a full set of expressive and dynamic articulations, offering various short and long notes, legatos (including fast legatos), crescendos and diminuendos, sfz, sffz, pfp, flutter tongue. Recording the samples relatively dry at the Silent Stage makes it possible to place them on your virtual stage and in the stereo field wherever you like, but also enables you to integrate the instrument with the Synchron Series by using the internal convolution reverb recreating Vienna’s own scoring stage, Vienna Synchron Stage.
