Studio Alto Trombone

The alto trombone extends the trombone family to its highest register, completing the range of four distinct tunings. Its bright and clear tone sets it apart within the brass family, making it ideal for creating counterpoints in harmonic passages. Recorded dry in its purest form at Vienna’s purpose-built Silent Stage with its tight, controlled ambience, this instrument shines with a uniquely vibrant and expressive sound.

A Composer’s Favorite

Widely used during the Baroque and Classical periods, the alto trombone has regained popularity for its nimble and expressive qualities. Composers such as Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy utilized it in their works and so did Benjamin Britten, which illustrates its adaptability and versatility. Its unique timbre resonated deeply with 19th-century Viennese composers, and now, this digital recreation of the alto trombone – straight from the City of Music – will inspire you with its melodic charm and bright tone.

Versatile and Expressive

The library features a full set of expressive and dynamic articulations, offering various short and long notes, legatos (including fast legatos), crescendos and diminuendos, sfz, sffz, pfp, flutter tongue, and half and whole tone trills. Recording the samples relatively dry at the Silent Stage makes it possible to place them on your virtual stage and in the stereo field wherever you like, but also enables you to integrate the instrument with the Synchron Series by using the internal convolution reverb recreating Vienna’s own scoring stage, Vienna Synchron Stage.
